Background[]
Not much is known about Zect's past, other than the fact he was possibly a yokai as stated by Jack Rakan and that he had lived a couple of centuries long just like Evangeline A.K. McDowell[1]. At some point, Zect meet Nagi Springfield and apparently took him as his apprentice. He eventually joined part with Nagi and formed a group which would be named "Ala Rubra".
Zect later fought alongside Nagi against the Mage of the Beginning, the Supreme Ruler of Cosmo Entelecheia. After the Mage of the Beginning was defeated, she transferred her soul into Zect's body and took over the control, becoming her new host body.
8 years later, Zect's body was killed and destroyed by Nagi during his second encounter against the Mage of the Beginning, which would resulted with Nagi being the one possessed by her instead and sealed inside the underground of Mahora Academy.

Although Zect didn't appear in the first anime due to the fact he haven't made his official debut yet in the manga at the time, the group photo featuring the Ala Rubra members was presented in the anime.
During the time Negi time travelled to the past to save Asuna's life, Nagi mentioned that prior to his journey together with Asuna, his comrades once blow up a mountain by accident with their immense powers.
